The open-air theater offers great plays for children and adults every summer.
Open-air theater experiences
For theater lovers and nature enthusiasts, Barsinghausen offers a very special highlight: nestled in the heart of the Deister lies one of Lower Saxony’s largest and most beautiful forest theaters—the Deister Open-Air Theater.
History
The open-air theater was founded in 1931 on the initiative of Otto Backhaus, then principal of the Barsinghausen school. Its performances were intended to contribute to the education of the people. The opening took place on August 11, 1931, with a production depicting the life of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. From then on, up to four plays were performed annually on the Deister open-air stage. During World War II, however, the stage was completely destroyed and looted. It wasn’t until 1951, after reconstruction, that plays could once again be performed here. Since then, several open-air theater performances, musicals, concerts, and guest performances have taken place here every summer from May through September.
Theater for all ages
Since its opening in 1931, approximately 1 million people have visited the open-air theater, which seats about 1,000 spectators. There is always something for both children and adults here, as the open-air theater’s amateur acting troupe presents at least one play for adults and one family-friendly play to its audience every year. During intermissions, the association—which now has 750 members—keeps the audience well-fed with homemade cakes, ice cream, and beverages.
