Berggasthaus Niedersachsen
A popular excursion destination - not just for cyclists.
Berggasthaus Niedersachsen
Toward the end of the 19th century, visiting country inns was a widespread pastime. People went there to relax, dine, chat, and dance to music. The Berggasthaus Niedersachsen was particularly popular at the time. It was easily accessible “in 30 minutes by electric tram,” as the Hanover tram company operated a line leading to Barsinghausen that included a branch line to the restaurant. The restaurant was situated in the middle of a sprawling park, which had been designed in 1898 by Hanover’s first director of parks, Julius Trip. After the main building was demolished, the grounds initially fell into obscurity, but were then restored in several phases during the 1980s and 1990s. The restaurant—now housed in the former carriage house—and the park with its imposing grand staircase have since become a popular destination once again.
