LPF Lehrte Museum Signal Box - Visit Hannover

Tips and information

LPF Museum Signal House

The oldest and largest mechanical signal box in northern Germany.

Old signal box with model railway club

Railway fans will be thrilled: a 21-meter-long and three-meter-wide model railway layout has been created with meticulous attention to detail—it’s one of a kind! The club’s enthusiasts have recreated the Lehrter passenger station as it appeared around 1960. In the former “spannings room” of the signal box, a detailed, fully functional model station has taken shape. With great attention to detail, the railway tracks, properties, and buildings surrounding the station have been recreated on a 1:87 scale.  Today, the layout already features several hundred meters of track. Historic structures such as the Lehrte water tower, the railway depot, and the roundhouse are represented, as are the original platform posts. Upstairs in the museum signal box on Richtersdorf Street (across from the Grünstraße railroad crossing), visitors can still admire the 30-meter-long control console with its switch and signal levers.

Hours:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Every fourth Sunday of the month, 110:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Directions:
The Lehrte Museum Signal Box is located on Richtersdorf Street (across the Grünstraße railroad crossing). After the barrier, turn left at the curve, then park in the forecourt of the signal box (a few free parking spaces are available).

Tip: Steam locomotive at Lehrte Station

There is also an old steam locomotive in Lehrte. This good old steam engine serves as a reminder of the days when trains used to speed through here on the Paris–Cologne–Hanover–Berlin–Moscow route. It was a gift to the city from a pharmacist and is open to the public (Bahnhofstraße).
