Mardorf Family Summer

The Mardorf Family Summer is once again bringing excitement to the summer vacation calendar this year. From July 15 through August 19, Aloys-Bunge-Platz will serve as a gathering place for families with children every Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. The free program ranges from nature experiences and play and climbing activities to creative workshops and bread baking. The series is organized by Lake Steinhuder Meer Tourism GmbH (SMT), with support from numerous partners.

A diverse program

Over the past few years, “Family Summer” has become an integral part of the vacation program. In 2026, the program will once again feature the mix that was so well-received last year: nature experiences, physical activity, creativity, and hands-on activities. Among other things, families can take a journey through time on playful discovery tours with the Lake Steinhuder Meer Nature Park or test their athletic skills on SeaTree’s mobile climbing course. In addition, the program offers many small experiences that make an afternoon at Lake Steinhuder Meer something special. Whether exploring out of curiosity, getting active together, or simply spending a relaxing day on vacation—Family Summer invites you to experience the summer in Mardorf together.

A particularly popular activity is traditional bread baking in the historic oven at the Mardorf Local History Museum, which guests can experience together with museum staff. Those who prefer a more laid-back atmosphere can let themselves be swept away by imaginative stories during storytime or be transformed into fantastical creatures at the face-painting station run by the Mardorf at Lake Steinhuder Meer Tourist Association. The bath salt workshop run by the town of Rehburg-Loccum invites visitors to make their own fragrant wellness gifts, while a magician works his magic to amaze the crowd, and forest educator Sina Kruse introduces children to the secrets of the forest and its animal inhabitants—an experience for all the senses.

Here's how it works:

The events always take place on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. around Aloys-Bunge-Platz 8b (Mardorf Tourist Information). Registration is not required, and participation in all activities is free of charge.

Several activities are held simultaneously, so each family can participate at their own pace and according to their interests. Some activities take place every week, while others vary. If the weather happens to be bad, the Tourist Information Office provides suitable indoor spaces where children can continue crafting and playing.

An important note: Children may only participate when accompanied by an adult supervisor. After all, what makes “Family Summer” so special is the shared experience—a time together that creates lasting memories.

The activities are primarily aimed at elementary school-aged children, but younger siblings are also welcome and will find plenty of hands-on stations where they can discover the world with their own hands and eyes.
