Obentraut Monument

A must-see for history buffs: the Obentraut Monument.

The Obentraut Monument in Seelze is an important historical landmark in the Region Hannover and commemorates Cavalry General Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut. The monument was erected in 1630 and marks the spot where Obentraut was mortally wounded during the Thirty Years' War in 1625.

The monument, which stands about six meters tall, consists of a sandstone pyramid topped by a sphere bearing an iron cross. An inscription and a coat-of-arms relief commemorate the person and the historical events associated with the monument.

Over time, the monument’s surroundings have changed: While it originally stood outside the village on a country road, it is now located within the established town limits of Seelze.

The Obentraut Monument is not only a place of remembrance, but also an integral part of the region’s history and identity. It is considered one of the city’s most famous monuments and is a designated historic landmark.
