Tips and information

Hänigser Mill

One of the few post mills is located in the district of Hänigsen.

The post mill—the archetype of the Central European windmill

The millhouse of the post mill is literally suspended from the so-called "hausbaum" or support post. When the wind changes direction, the entire millhouse must be reoriented to face the wind.

In the late Middle Ages, thousands of these windmills were found throughout Central and Northern Europe. Although they offered little scope for expansion and were vulnerable to storms and fire, the more modern Dutch windmill was never able to completely replace them.
Today, only a few of them remain, and even fewer are still in working order.

One of them is the post mill in Hänigsen. Built in 1704, it was, according to a document from 1705, exempt from all taxes in perpetuity—a right that remains valid to this day. Decommissioned in 1945, it was purchased in 1962 by miller Schubotz of the Schubotz Mill in Celle, who restored it and continued to operate it until 1995.

However, due to staffing issues, it can currently only be put into operation on an occasional basis.

The mill is open to visitors on the annual Mill Day (the first Sunday in September).
