Linen Factory

Visit Germany's oldest weaving mill.

The Wunstorf Linen Factory

For over 250 years, textiles for home use have been woven in Steinhude. From selecting the finest yarns to weaving on Jacquard looms and hand-sewing the woven fabrics, these exquisite textiles are produced with love and passion. A visit to the Linen Factory Leinenfabrik in the heart of Steinhude by the sea is definitely worth it.

Enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the historic surroundings, and learn more about this ancient craft at the museum. Across three exhibition spaces (the Bleaching Hall, the Yarn Store, and the Gallery), you’ll find fabrics and ideas for the table, kitchen, bed, and bath. The café, nestled amid the old factory halls, invites you to linger.

Bleaching Hall

Bleaching Hall

The Bleichhalle showcases a selection of cotton fabrics and table linens. You’ll also find a wide range of terry cloth items here, including our newly produced half-linen terry cloth. The factory’s fabric collections are presented in rotating exhibitions featuring seasonal decorations. Get ideas for your family celebrations, barbecues with friends, Advent afternoons, or a gala dinner, or simply gather inspiration for a more beautiful home as you stroll through the Bleichhalle.

Yarn base

Yarn base

The former yarn storehouse—where yarns for the production of Steinhude linen were once stored—now houses select collections of bed linens, kitchen textiles, and half-linen table linens. New standards of quality and durability are set across all product lines by reviving the finest qualities of linen yarn through traditional craftsmanship—handcrafted right here in Steinhude. New and classic patterns come together to form a modern collection that honors the German weaving tradition.

Gallery

The Wunstorf Linen Factory

This area of the gallery is dedicated to experimentation. It provides the perfect setting for prototypes, sample collections, and innovative presentation formats. Follow the process behind the creation of new fabric patterns, the development of individual exhibitions, and the identification of current trends. This space offers ample opportunity for creative exchange—and we encourage you to get involved.

Museum

Historical view

From the cotton plant to the finished fabric, visitors can trace the entire weaving process. Individual production steps and processes are illustrated using a projector. There are also photos of the managing directors of Seegers & Sohn and the staff. Visitors can marvel at and examine a handloom, a Jacquard machine from 1960, a carding machine, a winding machine, and a warping machine. Old ledgers show that the family business always reinvested its profits into the company, allowing it to grow steadily. Visitors enter the museum through the gift shop or the café. Admission is free.

Café

The Webercafé is located in the heart of the old factory buildings. Sit back and relax in the cozy atmosphere of the weaving mill’s high-ceilinged halls and get a sense of the tradition that lies behind these historic factory walls. At the café, you’ll be treated to traditional craftsmanship. A portafilter machine ensures not only quality but also the ultimate drinking experience. Coffee and tea are, of course, organically grown and fair trade. The specialty coffees can also be prepared with lactose-free or soy milk. The farmhouse cakes and bread are sourced from a local artisan baker. The selection is rounded out by regularly changing bread varieties and small treats.
