There used to be more than 20 barns built on the outskirts of the village to store unthreshed grain. This provided better protection against fire. Just a few steps away, you’ll find the “emigrant boats” that ferry visitors to the Wilhelmstein island fortress. The sculpture promenade along the shore is also worth seeing.
The Steinhuder Meer, located in the heart of the nature park, is considered the most scenic area in the Region Hannover. The nature park strikes a fair balance between nature conservation and recreation and has received numerous awards for this achievement.
On a hiking trail more than 30 kilometers long around the lake, visitors can venture into the heart of the sensitive protected areas, such as the lake-flooded meadows, and experience the flora and fauna up close at the numerous observation points. The bird habitat on the western shore of Winzlar and the Tote Moor on the northeastern shore between Mardorf and Steinhude are particularly attractive.
At the Nature Park Information Center in the Barn Quarter, visitors can learn about Steinhuder Meer, the moor, and the Meerbruch.
The Infoscheune is a popular year-round destination and was also very well received over the Christmas holidays. An annual calendar of events rounds out the diverse program.
