History of the Ballhof

The Ballhof was built between 1649 and 1665 on the orders of Duke Georg Wilhelm. It originally served as a games and ballroom for court festivities and dance events. The building is considered the largest half-timbered structure in the Old Town and reflects the grand architecture of the Renaissance.

After the heyday of court life, the Ballhof served a variety of purposes—including as a market hall and warehouse. Since the postwar period, however, the building has become an integral part of Hannover’s theater scene. Today, it is primarily used by the Niedersächsische Staatstheater GmbH.

The building impresses with its half-timbered façade, symmetrical gables, and historic interior featuring exposed beams. Despite several renovations, its original character has been preserved.
