History of the Ballhof

The Ballhof was built between 1649 and 1665 at the behest of Duke Georg Wilhelm. It originally served as a games and ballroom for court festivities and dance events. The building is considered the largest half-timbered structure in the Old Town and reflects the stately architecture of the Renaissance.

After the heyday of court life, the Ballhof was used for a variety of purposes—including as a market hall and warehouse. Since the postwar period, however, the building has become an integral part of Hanover’s theater scene. Today, it is primarily used by the Niedersächsische Staatstheater GmbH.

Architecture and special features of the Ballhof

The building impresses with its half-timbered facade, symmetrical gables, and historic interior with exposed beams. Despite several renovations, its original character has been preserved. Visitors can recognize the typical style of the Weser Renaissance in the facade—a testament to 17th-century Hanoverian architecture.
