The palace was built in 1637 and subsequently expanded and renovated several times. From 1837 to 1866, it served as the residence of the Kings of Hannover. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a frequent visitor here in his capacity as librarian and court counselor. Since 1992, the palace has housed the Lower Saxony State Parliament.
