Mendini House

The Mendini Haus is a splash of color in the middle of the city center.

The Mendini House in Hannover is a striking new building designed by architects Alessandro and Francesco Mendini for the publishing company Madsack. It is located at the corner of Lange Laube and Stiftstraße in the Mitte district and is characterized by a striking turquoise-blue and golden-yellow double-glazed facade. The façade was designed as an “all-glass construction” that also encompasses the building’s masonry-enclosed areas. The buildings on this site were originally constructed in the 1950s as austere functional structures after older buildings had been destroyed during World War II.

The Mendinis’ new design draws inspiration from the expressive style of the neighboring Anzeiger high-rise, built in the 1920s. In the sunlight, the glass façade appears vibrant and creates an abstract effect that, upon closer inspection, reveals a shift in color that follows the viewer’s movements. This interference effect is created by the superimposition of two glass surfaces with vertical, colored lines and a semi-transparent interior glazing. The interplay of light and color creates a dynamic and innovative effect that characterizes the building from both the outside and the inside.

In the immediate vicinity of the Mendini House, the Mendini brothers installed a striking BUSSTOPS bus stop at Steintorplatz in the 1990s, which also bears their creative signature. The Mendini House is thus not only a functional office and commercial complex, but also an architectural work of art that combines modern design with historical references.
