Hanover State Opera

The Hanover State Opera is one of the world's finest opera houses. The late-Classical building was constructed between 1845 and 1852.

The opera house on Georgstraße is one of the most beautiful buildings in Hanover. This magnificent structure was built between 1845 and 1852 based on a design by court architect Georg Friedrich Laves. It first served as the Royal Court Theater, as the theater in the castle had become too small. The late-Classical building, with its two large side wings, faces Georgstraße, a forecourt featuring stone sculptures of poets and composers.

The opera house burned down in 1943 and was rebuilt in its original style in 1948. During a major renovation in 1985, the opera house was equipped with a completely new sound system. The stage technology was updated between 1996 and 1998 and most recently in 2012.

In the past, the grand carriages used to drive up to the entrance so that the elegant guests could enter the opera house without getting their feet wet. Today, this function is served by the Opernplatz underground parking garage, which provides direct access to the building.
