The Deister

The De Höchdenzug trail, which winds through the fields, is an ideal setting for cyclists and hikers. The highlight of the year: Deistertag

Birds chirp, leaves rustle, and toads croak—at an altitude of up to 405 meters, a wealth of experiences blending nature and culture awaits you. Time and again, your gaze wanders over the expanses of the Calenberger Land or toward the Weserbergland; time and again, picturesque towns beckon you to stop for a picnic and rustic taverns invite you to take a break.

The journey itself is the destination—something that hikers, walkers, and cyclists discover for themselves all year round. People out for a stroll with a picnic basket feel just as at home here as long-distance cyclists passing through. You can also easily cycle all the way around the Deister—that’s 80 km in four stages on the Deisterkreisel. A collection of four brochures and map excerpts provides practical tips and background information. You can pick up this collection at the tourist information offices.

Historical treasures line the way, and the Deister region is full of things to experience. Impressive manor houses, beautiful village churches, and half-timbered houses bear witness to centuries of history. Magnificent parks, interesting museums, a collection of water and windmills, and the architecture of the Weser Renaissance are highlights for the whole family. Barsinghausen and Wennigsen are known for their culturally and historically significant monasteries. And last but not least, the traces of coal mining offer an informative diversion.
