The Maschsee Festival Has Begun

Hannover is celebrating summer and elite sports at Lake Maschsee:

The 38th Maschseefest officially kicked off on Wednesday with a spectacular opening show on a floating stage. For the first time, Northern Germany’s largest lake festival was launched in conjunction with Germany’s largest multisport event, the Finals 2026. Through August 9, the shores of Maschsee will once again be transformed into a lively promenade featuring international cuisine, live music, and a diverse cultural and family program. At the same time, from July 23 to 26, 143 German championship titles across 24 sports will be awarded as part of the Finals—with many competitions taking place right on and around Maschsee.

The opening ceremony alone made it clear just how wonderfully sports, culture, and festival atmosphere can be combined in Hannover. Numerous sports featured in the finals were showcased on a specially constructed floating stage. Musical highlights were provided by the Hannover-based band Fury in the Slaughterhouse and singer Lina Larissa Strahl, who hails from the Region Hannover.

At 5:30 p.m., while the sun was still shining, Mayor Belit Onay, Lower Saxony’s Minister of the Interior and Sports Daniela Behrens, Jens Palandt, First Regional Councilor of the Region Hannover, and André Lawiszus, Managing Director of Hannover Veranstaltungs GmbH (HVG), pressed the buzzer together to kick off the dual event consisting of the Maschsee Festival and The Finals 2026. This symbolic moment marked the start of 19 days of festival atmosphere at the Maschsee and four days of top-level sports in Hannover and the surrounding region. A colorful fireworks display provided the emotional finale to the opening show. A few seconds later, light rain began to fall briefly.

Belit Onay emphasized the special significance of this year’s summer: “The Maschseefest has been a flagship event for our city for decades and brings together people from Hannover, the region, and far beyond. The fact that we’re opening it this year together with the Finals impressively demonstrates just how diverse, hospitable, and vibrant Hannover is. We’re looking forward to great elite sports and a peaceful summer festival with a unique atmosphere.” André Lawiszus also sees the combination of both events as a special opportunity: “For nearly four decades, the Maschseefest has stood for joie de vivre, international enjoyment, and social interaction. Together with the Finals, we’re creating an extraordinary experience this year that combines sports and culture. Images from the Maschsee will be seen nationwide and will showcase Hannover at its best—as a modern, cosmopolitan city that hosts major events.”
