Cities are the driving force behind tourism in Lower Saxony. From January through June, the member cities of the “die 9 Städte” marketing partnership saw a 9 percent increase. This translates to a total of nearly 2.5 million overnight stays. Across the entire state of Lower Saxony, the increase was 2.5 percent.

The growth in visitor numbers from abroad is particularly impressive. Here, the increase in overnight stays compared to the first half of 2014 was as high as 15 percent. “These figures reflect the successful work of the marketing partnership ‘die_9 Städte in Niedersachsen,’” explains Hans Christian Nolte, spokesperson for the partnership and managing director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH.  The cities are primarily active together abroad. Nolte emphasizes that the cities are very satisfied with the progress made in the first half of the year. “The trade show calendar for the fall is less packed than last year. That will also have an impact on the number of overnight stays,” says Nolte.

Conferences in a historic setting

In addition to growth in vacation travel, the positive results are attributable in particular to rising visitor numbers at major events. Key factors include the trade fairs in Hanover, events such as Hildesheim’s anniversary year, as well as a large number of conferences and conventions in all member cities. In line with this trend, “die_9 Städte” have entered a new market segment. Offers related to conferences and conventions can now be found on the cities’ joint website at www.9staedte.de and are also being marketed internationally. In September, the cities—in collaboration with Hannover Kongress—will promote their offerings on over 200 large-format posters in the metropolitan areas of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The marketing partnership “die_9 Städte in Niedersachsen” has been in existence for over 30 years. Since 1984, Braunschweig, Celle, Göttingen, Goslar, Hameln, Hannover, Hildesheim, Lüneburg, and Wolfenbüttel have been marketing their offerings jointly, particularly in neighboring European countries. In 2010, the Autostadt in Wolfsburg joined the partnership. The primary goal of these activities is to raise awareness of the member cities and to increase visitor and overnight stay numbers through targeted outreach, advertising, and the recruitment of travel agents and end consumers.
