The season for tower tours is not expected to begin until late April

Due to weather-related damage to the facade, the Arch Elevator will not be able to reopen to visitors until the end of April, according to current plans. Following the winter months, spalling of tuff and mortar was discovered in the Arch Elevator’s waiting area and entrance. The City of Hanover is currently reviewing the necessary work to secure and repair the damaged sections of the facade and will begin the work shortly.

Background: The arched elevator in the New City Hall

Last year, approximately 98,000 visitors took the arc-shaped elevator up to the town hall dome. In addition to residents of Hanover, many visitors from Great Britain, France, the U.S., Japan, Spain, and the Netherlands enjoyed the breathtaking view.

The curved elevator is the only one of its kind in the world: Visitors first travel vertically and then at a 17-degree angle up to the gilded dome of City Hall, which stands nearly 98 meters tall. A window in the ceiling of the cabin allows passengers to follow the ride’s progress up close. Another window in the floor of the cabin can be made transparent at the push of a button. Once at the top, visitors are treated to a fantastic view of Lower Saxony’s state capital.
