Hannover – A Hub for Research and Science

Hannover is distinguished by its diverse higher education and research landscape—featuring academic excellence and a nearly comprehensive range of degree programs. Approximately 37,000 students, including 6,000 from abroad, are enrolled at Hannover’s academic institutions. The Hannover Medical School (MHH) is world-renowned for setting international standards in innovative transplant medicine.

The proportion of students in Hannover is higher than average. No other region in Germany has as many research staff in academia and teaching. It is home to four universities, renowned private academies, and universities of applied sciences.

With approximately 26,800 students and more than 180 degree programs across nine faculties, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover is Lower Saxony’s second-largest university. At the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, approximately 10,000 students across five faculties and 60 degree programs benefit from international study opportunities, practical relevance, and close ties to the business community.

The University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover (HMTMH) offers 33 degree programs. More than 1,500 students are enrolled at Lower Saxony’s only university of music. With over 3,300 students, Hannover Medical School is one of Germany’s top-performing universities.

Whether in research, teaching, or patient care, the Hannover Medical School ranks among the top university hospitals in Germany. It is a pioneer in the field of transplant medicine and is one of the world’s leading centers in this area. The University of Veterinary Medicine Foundation enjoys an international reputation, with 19 veterinary institutes, six clinics, and numerous centers. Over 2,400 students are enrolled there.

Hannover’s research centers are global leaders. Whether in geothermal energy, precision forging, or biomedicine: At the Production Technology Center Hannover (PZH), over 250 scientists collaborate with industry partners—making them pioneers of innovative processes and technologies “Made in Germany.” The Laser Center Hannover ranks among the most important European institutes in its field and serves as a catalyst for attracting companies in research and development as well as industry-oriented training.
