Miniature water mills
The Wennigsen waterwheels are among the main attractions in the Deister region and turn in the babbling waters of the Feldberg spring. Since 1957, they have been a well-known attraction far beyond the borders of Wennigsen. Along a stretch of about 100 meters, some 20 water-powered miniature mills have been set up. The small models, driven by the potential energy of the water dammed up in many stages, depict scenes from the world of children’s fairy tales and legends, as well as symbols of the imagination.
Water wheels
From Sesame Street to knights' castles, there is plenty to discover, both new and old. Children in particular are fascinated by the colorful miniature water mills and the lovingly crafted figures. The models can be viewed around the clock and there is no admission charge. However, there is a donation box at the foot of the waterwheels, which visitors can use to support the work of the dedicated community of craftspeople.
Traditionally, the waterwheels are unveiled on the last weekend in April and taken down again in early October. You can reach this popular destination via the Wennigsen Waldkater parking lot. From there, it’s a family-friendly walk of about 3 km. For an even easier option, follow the directions in the brochure “Der Deister – Erholen und Erleben” (The Deister – Relax and Explore)—available free of charge at all tourist information offices around the Deister and at Ernst-August-Platz in Hannover.
