With over 80,000 employees and more than 3,000 companies, the healthcare industry is Hannover’s number one growth market. The state capital of Hannover and its diverse region are known far beyond their borders for their array of globally recognized hospitals and universities. These include, among others, the Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University of Veterinary Medicine (TiHo), and the International Neuroscience Institute (INI), the leading and best-known clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with nervous system disorders.

Hannover Medical School (MHH)

With its more than 70 clinics, institutes, and research facilities, Hannover Medical School (MHH) exerts a significant influence and plays a major role in ensuring that, in addition to research and teaching, the full spectrum of the healthcare industry is represented in the Region Hannover and throughout the state. The numerous institutions and companies are leaders in their respective fields.

Leading research institutes, the headquarters of major medical equipment suppliers, and pharmaceutical companies—such as KIND Hearing Aids, Fraunhofer ITEM, SANOPHARM, and Octapharma—round out the offerings at this location.

Medical Park offers access to research networks, laboratory and office space, and many other location advantages for companies and newcomers. Entrepreneurs in the health and life sciences sector benefit from effective networks, funding agencies, opportunities for scientific collaboration, and the region’s training and continuing education programs—ideal conditions for growth and innovation.

University Cluster of Excellence

Four university clusters of excellence in Hanover—selected by the Joint Science Conference of the Federal Government and the States—have been receiving funding since 2019.
To benefit mutually from the results of their work, stakeholders in the life sciences have formed a network. The association Gesundheitswirtschaft Hannover e.V. aims to strengthen cooperation among members of the regional health industry. Facilitating the transfer of health-related knowledge and technology between academia and industry is a central goal of the association.

Hannover has been and will continue to be a venue for many medical conferences and congresses. For example, the bpt Congress (trade fair and congress for veterinary medicine), the International Congress of Hearing Aid Professionals (EUHA Congress), and the Midwives’ Congress (DHZ) are held there every two years. Hannover has also successfully hosted rotating conferences, such as the German Skin Cancer Congress, the Annual Meeting of the German Society for Transplantation, and the German Allergy Congress.
